Bertone Runabout
Design Lead
As Design Lead for the Bertone RUNABOUT, I defined the design vision for a limited-series reinterpretation of the iconic 1969 concept, translating Bertone’s historic experimentation into a contemporary coachbuilt sports car. The project balances heritage and innovation through a minimalist, wedge-driven language inspired by nautical architecture and Italian design culture, evolving the original concept into a fully road-legal production vehicle.
Built on a lightweight aluminium chassis and clothed in carbon-fiber bodywork, the RUNABOUT combines sculptural purity with modern performance engineering. Powered by a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 delivering approximately 475 hp through a six-speed manual gearbox, the car emphasizes mechanical intimacy and analogue driving engagement. Offered in both Barchetta and Targa configurations and limited to just 25 individually configured units, the vehicle represents Bertone’s return to bespoke automotive craftsmanship.
Presented at Rétromobile Paris 2026 within the Ultimate Supercar Garage, the RUNABOUT marks the launch of Bertone’s CLASSIC Line, a contemporary expression of the brand’s design legacy, merging historic audacity with modern performance and collector exclusivity.
The Creative Journey
Ideation
The exterior of the Bertone RUNABOUT is defined by two primary sculptural lines, a sweeping shoulder and a taut, architectural beltline, distilling the essence of the original 1969 concept into a contemporary form. This minimalist language preserves the purity and lightweight spirit of the original while redefining proportion and stance for modern high-performance engineering. The objective was not replication, but reinterpretation, maintaining the soul of the icon while asserting a new identity.
Design
The development phase began with a meticulous reinterpretation of the original concept, isolating its defining elements and translating them onto a modern chassis architecture. By preserving the clarity of the historic lines while integrating contemporary performance, aerodynamics, and structural precision, the new RUNABOUT evolves from homage into a road-legal, limited-series supercar, balancing heritage, functionality, and mechanical integrity.
Unveiling
The Bertone RUNABOUT was presented in Paris during Retromobile 2026 within the Ultimate Supercar Garage, positioning the vehicle among the world’s most exclusive collector automobiles. The launch reinforced its role as a contemporary expression of Italian design legacy, a limited-edition statement merging historic identity with modern performance, crafted for a new generation of connoisseurs.
